Looking forward to 2011 is an exciting prospect. The close out of 2010 and the dawning of 2011 presents new opportunities and challenges that will define a new direction in my artwork.
I am indeed grateful for the advances made during 2010; the presentation of my work at various galleries, book signings across the South, meeting new people interested in Caribbean art and some indigenous pieces created since my arrival in the United States, several news paper articles and upcoming opening at The Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Plantation, Florida. What an adventure!
I am especially proud of my artist website [ http://dixie-lee-hedrington.artistwebsites.com/ ] and would like to encourage my friends and fans to visit regularly and review new creations. The site gives you the option of purchasing any piece of artwork on canvas, poster, framed art or greeting cards. Send me a note at the site and discuss pieces that you like. I would enjoy sharing the options and helping you make a selection.
The painting shown this week, Virginia Lake, 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas, has a story behind it. One morning on my way to work in Chesapeake, Virginia, as I crossed over a small bridge and looked out the passenger window only to behold this site.
I immediately captured the scene in my mind and upon arriving at work, sketched it on a Post-it Note pad. Later, after dinner and homework, I sat down and drew in onto canvas and, as they say, the rest is history. I still remember the cool breeze blowing across my face as I was on top of the bridge looking over onto the lake. The reflection of the trees in the distance, the lake so still, it appeared to be glass, the rocks sitting at the water’s edge almost like ships about to depart to a new destination. The entire composition refreshed me with each brush stroke and the final composition… breathtaking!
Happy New Year and I look forward to spending small pleasant moments with you.
Dixie, again, you have written a beautiful story about that painting, Virginia Lake. Most folks may not be aware, but it hangs in my livingroom. Yes, folks, it does! It brings a quietness to my spirit as I glance at it from time-to-time walking passed it. Thanks for sharing this painting, in particular, because it’s mine.
That’s a opportunity that some readers don’t have, but by using the website, they too can have a Dixie creation hanging on their wall.
I look at the painting and just want to jump into the lake – maybe too cold?
Yes, you are so right, at the time I painted “Virginia Lake”, it was still cold in Virginia.
Looking forward to a successful New Year for you and myself as well. Enjoy reading your weekly blog. I drove passed this spot the other day and remembered your painting.
It is nice having you back in Virginia. On your daily activities, look for beautiful places and things. These are the things are create positive energy in your life.
I can’t believe that I look forward to reading this blog each week, but I do. Looking at the artwork and learning about art, painting techniques and up and coming things for you makes me proud you are my aunt.
I love your excitement and have been so happy to share it all with you. Love always, Auntie Dixie.
Well,Dixie,,2010was a year of many success stories for you!!!!and it was a great year for encounters and remembrances for all of us (VBA Family!!!!!)We must feel grateful to God for all His blessings,,, let us look forward to even MORE!!!!!!This painting,,”VIRGINIA LAKE” looks so peacefull,,and yes!! I can almost feel the cool breeze blowing from the lake!!!Wishing you lots of success for the year to come!!!! Your friend always!!!(^0^)/
Always so nice hearing from you Mary – your words of encouragement is so appreciated. When I painted Virginia Lake, it was just a slow drive to work early. Virginia has lots of waterways (always loved that) it reminded me of home. The feeling that welled up in me when I glanced out that passenger window was memorable. May you, too, be blessed in the New Year and I look forward to sharing more artwork, perhaps, a new book in 2011.
Again, another nicely written article. Looking forward to more successful accomplishment in 2011. Now, on to the New Year with God’s blessings and many more windows of opportunities to showcase your work.
The dazzling, glassy reflections highlighted in “VIRGINIA LAKE” is calming, indeed. However, don’t speak right now of remembering “the cool breeze blowing across my face.” Cool breeze is not a nice word this time of year :). Happy day!!
That’s too funny Angela. Now that I live in the states, cool breeze means something again. The weather in Florida is up-and-down; Virginia isn’t any better right now. It was a nice feeling to see it and when I finished the piece, I felt the same. Wanted to thank you for your visit and rekindling of friendships.
I love this painting, it makes me feel as if I can just jump in the lake. I wonder what’s around the bend.
Glad that you like this painting. It is one of my favorites too. When I created it, the excitement that welled up in me was beyond explanation. What was around the bend was my job and I worked that day knowing that as soon as I got home, I would be able to sketch the scene from my post-it note and begin painting it. Looking forward to drawing with you before you leave.
Auntie Dixie, you’ve done so much in this past year, it’s amazing. Each year keeps progressing with your artistic career. I’m proud of you!
