Looking Forward

Looking forward to 2011 is an exciting prospect. The close out of 2010 and the dawning of 2011 presents new opportunities and challenges that will define a new direction in my artwork.

I am indeed grateful for the advances made during 2010; the presentation of my work at various galleries, book signings across the South, meeting new people interested in Caribbean art and some indigenous pieces created since my arrival in the United States, several news paper articles and upcoming opening at The Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Plantation, Florida. What an adventure!

I am especially proud of my artist website [ http://dixie-lee-hedrington.artistwebsites.com/ ] and would like to encourage my friends and fans to visit regularly and review new creations. The site gives you the option of purchasing any piece of artwork on canvas, poster, framed art or greeting cards. Send me a note at the site and discuss pieces that you like. I would enjoy sharing the options and helping you make a selection.

The painting shown this week, Virginia Lake, 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas, has a story behind it. One morning on my way to work in Chesapeake, Virginia, as I crossed over a small bridge and looked out the passenger window only to behold this site.

"VIRGINIA LAKE" 16 x 20 acrylic on canvas (2003)

I immediately captured the scene in my mind and upon arriving at work, sketched it on a Post-it Note pad. Later, after dinner and homework, I sat down and drew in onto canvas and, as they say, the rest is history. I still remember the cool breeze blowing across my face as I was on top of the bridge looking over onto the lake. The reflection of the trees in the distance, the lake so still, it appeared to be glass, the rocks sitting at the water’s edge almost like ships about to depart to a new destination. The entire composition refreshed me with each brush stroke and the final composition… breathtaking!

Happy New Year and I look forward to spending small pleasant moments with you.
